The story of the Dutch Pipes and Drums begins in Tilburg in 1953. The formation of the youth pipe band, then named ‘De Scotjes’ (The Wee Scots), was a direct result of the profound impression left by the Scottish liberators. In October 1944, Tilburg was liberated by the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division. The sight, and especially the sounds, of this division's pipers greatly inspired the local community. As a tribute and to keep the memory of their liberators alive, the decision was made to establish their own pipe band. Thus, the association was born from a sense of gratitude and a fascination with Scottish culture.

Growing Up

In its early years, ‘De Scotjes’ quickly gained fame both at home and abroad as a unique youth band. As the young members grew up, the name ‘De Scotjes’ no longer seemed fitting. The little ‘Scots’ had become adult ‘Scotsmen’, which led to the name change to the current and more internationally recognized "Dutch Pipes and Drums". Another significant milestone in their history is the official recognition as a clan corps within the worldwide Clan Donald organization, which further emphasizes the authentic Scottish traditions the band upholds. These steps mark the evolution from a local initiative to the largest and one of the most professional pipe bands in Europe.

Highlights on Stage

The band has a long and impressive list of memorable performances. Back in the days of ‘De Scotjes’, there were highlights such as parades for Queen Juliana and an inspection by the famous British Field Marshal Montgomery in 1957. The major breakthrough in modern times came in 2005 when the band was invited to participate in the Dutch National Tattoo (Nationale Taptoe), an event which led to the band being present on the international stage since. Their most famous collaboration is undoubtedly with André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. Also noteworthy is the collaboration with the popular Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis during his renowned 'Groots' concerts. Since 2007, the band has been touring worldwide, becoming a staple at countless commemorations, parades, and international military tattoos.
